DEWALT DWE1622K 2-Speed Magnetic Drill Press Review

Most of the drilling machines we’ve featured up to this point have been geared towards consumers or light commercial work. They’re the type of drill presses you can toss in the back of the truck, beat em up a bit and not have to worry about it, but this one by DeWalt is for serious, serious work.

All of the presses that get featured on this site are great, but this one is truly next level. It’s not for everyone, and most people will be just fine with something a bit more basic… but when push comes to shove, if you want the very best, this one is hard to beat. Here’s why…

Note: This is more of a specialty tool, for people who need to drill through metal in particular. If you’re just looking to drill some simple holes in wood, this will be way overkill and not the best tool for the job. If you need to drill through metal on a regular basis, and you’ve got the budget for it, you can save yourself some time and just grab this machine right now because it’s perfect for that job.

What we LOVE About the DEWALT DWE1622K

Serious jobs require serious tools, and this is a SERIOUS tool. Can you toss in a different bit and do some work working with it? Sure, but again, that’s overkill and probably not ideal. But for metal working? PERFECT! PERFECT! PERFECT!

Key Features of the DEWALT DWE1622K

Now let’s get into the specifics by breaking down some of the specs and features, and why they matter.

Feature: 10 amp motor

Why it matters: It packs some serious power for its size. For basic woodworking, you can get away with a much less powerful motor and still breeze through boards with ease. This guy, however, is significantly more powerful so that it can cut through thick, hard, solid pieces of metal while barely breaking a sweat.

Feature: Overload protection

Why it matters: Spider-Man learned that great responsibility comes with great power, and he learned it the hard way. In this case, there are not any hard lessons because the overload protection circuits prevent motor damage from over-working this machine. It’s easy to get caught up in your work, especially when your tools make it such a breeze, so this feature helps ensure that you’re never pushing the tool harder than it can handle, which ensures that it’ll have a long life.

Feature: Warranty

Why it matters: If worse comes to worse and you still run into trouble with this machine, you’re covered with a 3 year warranty. If you’re using this press on a regular basis, which you should be to justify having such a nice one, then it’ll pay for itself many times over before you even have to worry about that. It should last much longer than 3 years if you’re taking care of it and not pushing it into overload constantly.

Feature: 2 Speeds

Why it matters: We’ve praised some wood presses for their multiple speeds, but with this one they’re just keeping it simple, and it’s actually a good thing. You don’t want to overdo it when you’re dealing with this much power. You can go at either 300 rpm or 450 rom, which provides ample versatility. Remember, this is more of a specialized tool, for specific jobs, rather than trying to get a jack of all trades.

The Drilldown

If you need to drill holes into metal, and you want to have the best experience possible while doing it, this is the best bet. There are options that are cheaper, there are machines that are more versatile with more features, but that doesn’t matter when all you need to do is one thing, and you want it done perfectly. If that’s the case, this is your bet best, hands down. If you need a more versatile tool, check out some of the other drills we’ve featured.
