WEN 4208 8 in. 5-Speed Drill Press Review

Why is the WEN 4208 8 in. 5-Speed Drill Press one of the easiest drill presses for us to recommend? There are a lot of reasons, and we’ll get to all of them.

First things first, if you’re in a hurry or just want to confirm that you’re looking at the right drill press for your needs, let’s go over the very basics, then we’ll dig in and cover this excellent tool in more depth. (We briefly covered it when we compared the best drill presses)

WEN 4208 Drill Press Review:

When it comes to the world of drilling and finding quality presses, you need to think about quality and speed. This model (4208) is fantastic in those areas.

The price: The price to value ratio of the WEN 4208 is just off the charts. This press blows away some models that cost 2x or even 3x as much, it’s got excellent specs (which we’ll feature in a few moments), and it opens up a ton of doors for your DIY projects without breaking the bank or taking up a ton of space.

The quality: For the price, you’ll be blown away at how well this tool is made. Look, you’ve still got to have realistic expectations, it’s not going to compare to a high-end, commercial-grade drill press like you’d find in a factory or a woodshop, but that’s okay – because if you’re just using it at home, or on light job sites, it’s perfect.
Now let’s look at the features / specs of the WEN 4208:

Feature: 5 different operative speeds

Why it matters: The versatility of different speeds is a nice feature to have, you don’t always see this on the more affordable drill presses (you don’t always see it on more expensive ones, either.) This gives you more control of the drill, and allows you to choose the best speed based on the material you’re using, how dense it is, what drillbit you’ve got in place, and any other important factors.

Feature: 8-inch swing

Why it matters: The 8-inch swing on the WEN 4208 press gives you ample space for just about anything. It’s a bit smaller than some of the other models out there, but it’s not going to be make-or-break unless you absolutely need to drill into much bigger pieces of material that won’t fit on here. Most people won’t notice at all.

Feature: 1/3hp induction motor

Why it matters: It’s not the most powerful motor out there, but it packs plenty of punch for what we need it for. Again, as far as home use and light jobs, this is a perfect choice – if you need something huge and way more powerful, there are other options that will suit you better.

Feature: Very adjustable

Why it matters: There are numerous points at which you can adjust this drill, including raising and lowering the plate, and tilting it so that you can drill on an angle up to 45 degrees in either direction.

More Things to Consider

If you’re looking to spend as little as possible, then a drill stand is another option instead. If you already own a drill, then getting a decent stand for it gives you the same functionality of being able to press and drill accurately from above. In this case, you’re getting a stand that’s better than most of the cheaper options out there, AND it comes with the drill, so it’s hard to beat this value unless you have a very high-end drill already and want to avoid redundancy.

The 4208 as a drill press is one of the best we’ve featured when you factor in value and cost, however, if you have a limited budget then there are some better options out there.

The main reason that we recommend this one so strongly is because it’s just perfect for most people, for most projects. Of course, if you plan on running it for hours a day, doing heavy workloads and beating the heck out of it, then a higher-end model will be a better choice for you.

If you’re a hobbyists looking to have more control over your projects, with more accuracy, this is a great way to achieve that. It’s not very large, which is good in terms of storage and being able to carry it around, however if you want to have a dedicated table in your workspace and you’ve got the room, then a smaller size isn’t a huge selling point.
